Deli Burgers

When May finally gets here, I have a simple equation: nicer weather = BBQ season. David and I love grilling and every chance we have, we fire up the barbecue to make one of our delicious recipes like Greek Ouzo Pork Kebabs, Grilled Tuna Steaks, Fire Roasted Salsa, Rotisserie Chicken, Lamb Kofta, Creole Shrimp & Andouille Skewers, and so on.

Of course, there are the popular ones like burgers and hot dogs but if I have to pick between the two of them, I’ll definitely go with the first one. I really can’t stand the fast food ones and prefer making my own. I think of my California, Hawaiian Teriyaki, Blue Cheese, Italian or Mexican ones, Bronto and Smoky Porky! Let’s add another mouthwatering one to this list… my Deli Burgers!

What?
This comfort food is made with three kinds of meat; beef, Montréal smoked meat and Black Forest Ham! Believe it or not, the combination is absolutely “bang on”. It also comes with a beautiful mustard sauce made with mayo, prepared mustard and horseradish. You might think these Deli Burgers are odd but let me tell you that the results are amazing!

When I make them, I usually form 4 patties – they’re big boys! They’re over half a pound each but you can always make them smaller… your call! I chill them for about 1 hour to let the flavor blend together. When 60 minutes is up, I bring them back to room temperature – they cook more evenly that way – and turn the barbecue on until it reaches 500ºF. Grill them 6 to 7 minutes per side, add my hamburger buns a few minutes before the burgers are done and top the patties with processed cheese… voilà!

With three different kinds of meats along with a nice mustard sauce, these Deli Burgers are deli-cious! This is an incredible and original recipe perfect for BBQ season. They are sure to please your guests at your next backyard party…

Ingredients

BURGERS

  • 1 1/2 lbs. (750 g) lean ground beef
  • 5 oz. (150 g) Montréal smoked meat (substitute corned beef or pastrami), cut into small pieces
  • 5 oz. (150 g) Black Forest ham, cut into small pieces
  • 1/4 cup Panko® breadcrumbs
  • 3 tbsp. onions, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp. barbecue seasoning
  • 1/2 tsp. garlic salt
  • 1/2 tsp. freshly ground black pepper, or to taste (I always use mixed peppercorns)
  • 4 hamburger buns see Recipe
  • 8 slices American cheese
  • 4 butter lettuce leaves
  • 4 slices tomatoes
  • 4 tbsp. hot banana peppers, as needed

MUSTARD SAUCE

  • 3 tbsp. mayo see Recipe
  • 1 1/2 tbsp. prepared mustard
  • 1 1/2 tbsp. creamy horseradish, or more see Recipe

Directions

  • In a large bowl, combine ground beef, Montréal smoked meat, ham, panko, onions, BBQ seasoning, garlic salt and freshly ground black pepper. Using clean hands, mix the ingredients until well blended.
  • Form 4 patties with the mixture and place them on a plate.
  • Cover tightly with plastic wrap and transfer them to the fridge for 1 hour.
  • Mix all the mustard sauce ingredients in a small bowl; set aside.
  • Sixty minutes later, take the patties out of the fridge, remove the cling film and let them sit on the counter for about 20 minutes.
  • Preheat the barbecue to 500ºF
  • Place the patties on the grates, close the lid and grill them for about 6 to 7 minutes on each side.
  • Three minutes before they’re done, place the hamburger buns on the top rack to toast, about 2 minutes.
  • Remove the buns and set them aside.
  • Place a couple slices of processed cheese, close the lid and cook until melted, about 1 minute.
  • To assemble the burgers, place lettuce, meat patty, a slice of tomato, hot banana peppers and then spread a generous amount of our mustard sauce on the bun.
