Grilled Tuna Steaks

As the summer weather is nicer it allows us to enjoy the outdoors more often. David and I are avid golfers and we also like cycling and walking. After enjoying one of these activities, what’s better than making a meal on the barbecue! We grill almost everything because we like the smokiness it gives the food and also why heat up the kitchen during the hot summer months?

We grill many different proteins. When it comes to fish, we have our favorites like Grilled Marlin Steaks, East Coast Swordfish, Tarragon Limoncello Halibut, Stuffed Snapper, Grilled Fish Tacos, Polynesian Mahi Mahi, Pacific Coast Salmon, and many more. There’s another dish we love to make often and it’s Grilled Tuna Steaks!

This fish recipe is totally an OMG! The steaks are marinated for 2 to 3 hours in a beautiful mixture of ingredients elevating the delicate flavor of the tuna. After the passive time is done, they are grilled perfectly on the barbecue, basting the fish with the warm marinade… These Grilled Tuna Steaks are a great recipe to make anytime. It’s an elegant way to enjoy this protein without spending too much time prepping and cooking it, perfect for when you have company over. The total grilling time is only 4 ½ minutes giving you plenty of time to enjoy yourself with your guests.

Like any fish or meat, it’s important to bring the tuna back to room temperature after marinating it as it will cook more evenly and faster, keeping the protein moist. During the summer, it obviously takes less time to bring the fish back to room temperature – 15 to 20 minutes at the most – but if you plan on grilling it during the coldest months of the year, it might take a good 30 to 40 minutes, depending on the thickness of your tuna steaks.

Moist, tender and absolutely delicious, these Grilled Tuna Steaks pair very well with many different sides. The sweet-tangy sauce complements the fish perfectly making this dish a great choice for summer barbecues…

Prep Time 10 minutes
Cook Time 5 minutes
Passive time 2 hours

Ingredients

  • 2 -8 ounces tuna steaks
  • 1/4 cup pineapple juice
  • 2 tbsp. olive oil tips & tricks
  • 1 tbsp. sesame oil
  • 1 tbsp. low-sodium soy sauce
  • 1 large clove garlic, pressed
  • 1 tsp. honey (substitute agave) tips & tricks
  • 1/2 tbsp. minced ginger
  • 1/2 tbsp. fresh dill, chopped
  • 1/2 tbsp. fresh chives, finely chopped tips & tricks
  • 1/2 tsp. freshly ground black pepper, or to taste (I always use mixed peppercorns)

Directions

  • In a bowl, add pineapple juice, olive oil, sesame oil, soy sauce, pressed garlic, honey, minced ginger, dill, chives, and freshly ground black pepper. Whisk the ingredients until very well blended.
  • Place the tuna steaks in a large re-sealable plastic bag and pour marinade over the fish. Close the bag and gently toss it to coat the fish. Place the bag on a pie plate and transfer to the fridge for 2 to 3 hours.
  • Remove the steaks from the bag and let them sit for 15 to 20 minutes at room temperature.
  • Meanwhile, pour the marinade in a small saucepan over medium-low heat and warm it up.
  • Preheat the grill between 450ºF to 475ºF and lightly oil the grates.
  • Place tuna steaks on the barbecue and cook for 2 ½ minutes. One minute later, baste them with the warm marinade. Flip the steaks and cook for an additional 2 minutes or to desired doneness, basting once again. When serving them, spoon the remaining sauce over the fish.
