I like the month of May. The trees 🌳 are growing new leaves, the flowers are blooming, and the grass is getting greener. This is also a month filled with events and holidays like Cinco de Mayo, Mother’s Day, Victoria Day as well as Memorial Day.

Another one that is quite popular in the Southeastern United States is the Kentucky Derby! Being the longest continually held sporting event in America, this most-watched and most-attended horse race 🏇 takes place on the first Saturday of May.

As millions won’t be able to be present in person, this is an opportunity to gather with friends. A function of that level is never complete without a great selection of food and drinks while everyone is wearing elegant outfits and ladies displaying their embellished hats 👒.

What is often served that day is Burgoo, Pimento Cheese Sandwiches, Fried Chicken 🐓, Beer Cheese Dip, Benedictine Finger Sandwiches, Macaroni Salad, Chocolate Bourbon Pecan Pie, and many other tasty dishes plus the famous Mint Julep, Bourbon Derby Punch, Oaks Lily Cocktail, and Kentucky Mule.

There’s one that I like serving when hosting a summer party that is also a traditional Derby food item is Kentucky Hot Brown Sliders! These delicious little guys are simply amazing! Made with turkey, tomatoes 🍅, cheese, bacon along with seasonings, this hot food item is always a crowd-pleaser!

I’m sure MY version differs from the ones in the south… or maybe not! I got this Kentucky Hot Brown Sliders recipe when I was living in Toronto and attended a Run for the Roses 🌹 house party in Aurora. I duplicated it at my next summer gathering and modified it a couple times until I got to this version.

The buns I like using for this application are King’s Hawaiian Savory Butter Rolls 🍞. There are also other flavors such as Jalapeño Rolls, Sweet, and Honey Wheat. On the other hand, regular dinner rolls are another delicious option.

The recipe itself is super easy. Where I find it can be a little challenging is when slicing 🔪 the buns lengthwise. The best way is to gently hold them down. It’s even better when there’s someone standing by to guide you while doing this step so they’re even.

After the bottom rolls have been spread with a mix of mayo and mustard, turkey and tomato slices, cheese plus bacon are placed on top. I also add seasonings. It gives that “flavor lift” to them. Gruyère 🧀 is often the one that is used but Emmental, Gouda, Jarlsberg or Swiss are great alternatives.

The top buns are placed over. To give that famous buttery flavor to the sliders, a mix of melted butter 🧈, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, garlic and onion powder is brushed on top. They’re covered with foil, baked for 20 minutes before being uncovered and baked for another 5 minutes… voilà done!

These tasty Kentucky Hot Brown Sliders are perfect for this occasion or any other gathering! They’re very easy to prep and make a delicious finger food to serve your guests! Wear your fancy clothes 🥻 and enjoy these tasty little guys…
