Easy Egg Rolls in a Bowl
As a foody, I watch a lot of cooking programs like Master Chef, The Worst Cooks in America (I still have a hard time accepting chef Anne Burrell’s death 😥), Tucci in Italy (one of my bucket list destinations), Holiday Baking Championship, Ciao House with Alex Guarnaschelli, and many others.
About 20 years ago, many chefs started to deconstruct recipes. Meanwhile, there was a recipe I posted that I found super easy to make and it was Egg Rolls. A friend of mine tried these and told me that the recipe was a little challenging. I was surprised… Then the light went off 💡!
This is why I decided to deconstruct this popular North American Chinese item in this recipe… Easy Egg Rolls in a Bowl! With a beautiful mix of ingredients, this is a quick dish to enjoy for lunch or as a light meal plus it’s not hard to make 👩🍳👨🍳.
Green and red cabbage are among the ingredients. Both are very nutritious 💚 with a nice array of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. I prefer slicing them myself instead of buying a bag. It’s fresher and costs less versus pre-cut.
I use lean ground pork. I know it’s a little more money 💰 than the regular meat. If you don’t use the lean one, you’ll have to drain the extra fat otherwise the mixture will get oily. As much as fat gives flavor, it doesn’t work well in this application.
There’s Chinese brown sugar that goes in but if you don’t have any, simply use brown sugar. Other Chinese ingredients go in this Easy Egg Rolls in a Bowl such as Chinese 5 Spice, Hoisin Sauce and Oyster Sauce which gives a nice umami flavor with a hint of sweetness and saltiness 🧂.
The cooking time takes only 15 minutes ⏳ at the most which is perfect as a weeknight meal or when time is in short supply. I like serving it on a bed of rice and sprinkle on some green onions, cilantro and toasted sesame seeds… yummy!
After a couple decades, many deconstructed almost everything so I joined in the trend by creating this Easy Egg Rolls in a Bowl! With gorgeous flavors 😋, this meal is certainly a must try. It’s another tasty way to enjoy this popular Chinese appetizer…
