Homemade Sour Mix
With my big hair and high heels, going to bars and clubs in the 80s’, there was a wide range of colorful drinks like Woo Woo (I’m not kidding you), Tequila Sunrise, Long Island Iced Tea, Grasshopper, Singapore Sling, Blue Lagoon, Sex on the Beach, Piña Colada, Cosmopolitan, B-52, etc.
I remember that big green bottle of Sour Mix sitting on the shelf behind the bartender. It’s was a mixer to make Amaretto Sour, Blue Hawaii, Whiskey Sour, Cable Car, Midori Sour, Tom Collins, Margarita, and so on. It was okay but nothing fantastic.
Later during that decade, I became a bartender and that is when I decided to make it from scratch… Homemade Sour Mix! I think it should be called “simple” in front of it because it’s extremely easy to make. With equal parts of simple syrup, freshly squeezed (don’t use the bottle) lemon juice as well as freshly squeezed lime juice (same here, leave that commercial bottle alone… it’s concentrated), this is how this bar mixer is made.
Besides a number of cocktail recipes that can be made with Homemade Sour Mix, this can also be incorporated in regular beverages. Add some in a tall glass of water over ice and you’ve got yourself a quick Lemonade. If you crave for a 7•Up and have none around, pour a couple ounces of this bar mixer in a glass of club soda. To spike the flavor of your cranberry juice, add an ounce of it.
Also known as sweet & sour mix, Homemade Sour Mix is a bar essential. It can be stored in a cool, dark place or in the refrigerator. After making it from scratch, you’ll never go back to the commercial brands.
Cheers! 🥂
