Homemade Tia Maria
Iβve always enjoyed entertaining. I love having my friends and family over and treating them with great food π₯§ and refreshing cocktails. As much as itβs fun being the hostess, it can be quite pricey depending on how many guests you are having over and what youβll be serving that day. I guess that is why potlucks are so popular these days…
When I just moved out on my own, my budget was very limited and most of the time I was asking people to bring their own booze. These days, it depends. If I invite 2 couples over for dinner, they technically donβt have to bring their own (I say βtechnicallyβ because if someone asks me what to bring over, I always mention βwineβ π·) but if there are more, I definitely ask them to bring their own booze although Iβll be serving something like Sangria, Margarita, Cosmo, etc. at one point or another.
Back when I was on a very tight budget…
Buying any liqueur at the store was expensive for me and I really had to make the right choice. One day though, one of my motherβs clients gave her a βhomemade liqueurβ recipe (she owned a couple of hair salons π) and it was Tia Maria! It was one of my favorite liqueurs back then so I just couldnβt wait to make it. It was like the brand from the store except perhaps a tad sweeter. As I got older, I modified the recipe a few times. Iβve been adding a little less sugar and depending on how I feel, I either use espresso or regular instant coffee.
Since I moved to British Columbia, I havenβt made Homemade Tia Maria very often. The reason behind it is that here in BC, they donβt sell pure alcohol unless you have a license or youβre a doctor π©ββοΈ, dentist, veterinarian, pharmacist, etc. I got my βliqueur makingβ supplies when I was visiting family and friends back east.
The next question is β βcan it be made with vodka?β Yes! The same applies when making your own Limoncello, Amaretto, Peach π, Amaro, other Coffee Liqueur and so on. I personally prefer alcohol but when push comes to shove, vodka is the second best solution.
At the end of October or the beginning of November, I like to get ready for the Holidays π. Planning the menu as well as cocktails ahead can be less stressful. When it comes to Homemade Tia Maria or any other liqueur, itβs always nice to make it in advance so the flavor has time to develop and combine nicely together.
This is such a great recipe from scratch! This Homemade Tia Maria is perfect served on the rocks π§ with some milk or as an ingredient for other concoctions like Spanish Coffee, Mochatini, White Russian, Coco Cognac, and even in recipes like Tiramisu! The advantages of making it at home are you can adjust it to your liking and it makes more than a 750ml bottle plus you’re saving money! Like I always mention, please drink responsibly.
Cheers! π₯

If you want to substitute freshly brewed espresso coffee, how much would you use?
Thank you and it’s my pleasure π! You might want to start with 1/2 cup of freshly brewed espresso… should be about right! Please let me know how it turns out. Have a lovely day Liliana π
Hi Frankie. I added 2/3 and it was perfect (I like mine strong). Do you have another homemade liqueur I can try? Thank you and have a nice day.

My wife just made a batch! It’s so DELICIOUS!
Awesome π! This liqueur is so easy to make plus you save money π° by making it yourself. Cheers Tony!
My mum used to make Tia Maria for very special occasions, like Christmas. I canβt remember what she used but it might have been brandy. She served it in a tiny liqueur glass with a spit of heavy cream floating to be sipped. It was divine xx
Hi Suse,
Thanks for sharing π. It’s great to reminisce about the Holidays π. I use alcohol although vodka is another option. The reason why is because it doesn’t flavor the Tia Maria as well as the coffee and vanilla taste. Merry Christmas & Happy New Year π₯³
Thank You for the recipe, does the vodka have to be a certain percentage ?
You’re welcome Bianca π. I’m not using Vodka, I’m using alcohol but feel free to use Vodka if you can’t find alcohol. Have a nice day π
Very Good ππ π
Isn’t it? So easy to make π©βπ³π¨βπ³ with delicious results! Enjoy your weekend Jeffrey
Great recipe.. do you know the shelf life of this drink? Thanks
Thank you π. The liqueur itself last a long time – we’re almost done with the last batch I made which was 2 years ago. Now, the drink itself πΈ with milk has to be consumed just like a regular cocktail – you mix it, you drink it! Enjoy your weekend βοΈ
Nice
Thanks Chef Vinni π This is a great homemade recipe and the beauty is you can adjust to your liking. Enjoy the rest of your day π
Not familiar, but sounds so delicious !
It’s quite similar to Kahlua. It’s a coffee liqueur, great with milk π₯ on the rocks, or as an ingredient in a Spanish Coffee. Enjoy your day Linda π
