Michelada • Mexican Beer Cocktail

I’ve never really been a beer drinker. There’s a little aftertaste that I can’t get over. Although beer is certainly not one of my preferred drinks, once in a blue moon, I don’t mind having one especially when it’s hot outside 🥵. The way I like it is with clamato juice and it’s called a Red Eye.
There are some beer cocktails I’ve tried that I don’t mind. I think of Coronarita 🍹, Shandy, and also Dr. Pepper. There are also other drinks made with beer that I never had such as Black Velvet, Corrido Prohibido, and Boilermaker.
One that I had last summer and surprisingly, it was quite tasty was Michelada! This refreshing Mexican beer cocktail is similar to a Bloody Caesar as well as a Red Eye. It’s almost a mix of both. It has clamato juice, lime juice, Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, and Tajín along with salt 🧂 and pepper.
If you’re an American, most likely, you’ll reach for tomato juice 🍅 because you’re accustomed to it when having a Bloody Mary. It’s not a bad substitute but I highly suggest getting out of your comfort zone and try it with clamato juice. It’s thinner plus it’s a combination of both, clamato juice and tomato juice along with spices with a slight briny taste in the background.
This Michelada • Mexican Beer Cocktail wouldn’t be Mexican if it wasn’t about having its beer 🍺. There’s no right or wrong. Simply use your preferred ones. It can be Corona, Pacífico, Modelo, Sol, etc. Another option is to use a light beer…
This is super fast to make. Just like a Bloody Caesar/Bloody Mary, it can be garnished with many food items. You can use a mix of them like cocktail onions, cherry tomatoes, green olives stuffed with pimento, poached shrimp, gherkins, sausage, hot peppers, celery stick 🥬, etc.
Even if you’re not a beer drinker but enjoy a Bloody Caesar/Mary once in a while, you’ll certainly like this Michelada • Mexican Beer Cocktail! It’s refreshing and a fun drink to have anytime. With Super Bowl 🏈 coming up this weekend, I’m sure your guests will enjoy this drink…
Cheers!🍻

Ingredients
- 1 lime wedge, for glass rims plus more for garnish
- 1/2 tbsp. Tajín® (substitute chili lime spice blend)
- 1/8 tsp. ground Himalayan pink salt, plus small pinches for drinks
- 4 to 6 large ice cubes optional
- 1 cup clamato juice
- 1 tbsp. freshly squeezed lime juice tips & tricks
- 1 1/2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce, or to taste
- 1 1/2 tsp. Cholula or Valentina, or to taste
- 1/2 tsp. freshly ground black pepper, or to taste (I always use mixed peppercorns)
- 2 bottles (355 ml each) cold Mexican beers of your choice such as Corona, Pacífico, Modelo, Sol, etc.
- garnishes of your choice (cocktail onions, celery sticks, cherry tomatoes, stuffed olives, gherkins, sausage, poached shrimp, hot peppers, etc.)
Directions
- Place large glasses or mugs in the freezer and chill for 20 minutes.
- Run a lime wedge around the rims and set aside.
- In a small, shallow bowl, add Tajin® and 1/8 tsp. salt; mix well. Dip prepared glasses into the mixture so the rims are well coated.
- Add 2 to 3 ice cubes per glass and set aside.
- In a cocktail mixing glass or Boston shaker, add clamato juice, lime juice, Worcestershire sauce and hot sauce; shake it well. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed; add freshly ground black pepper.
- Evenly divide the clamato mixture between the two prepared glasses and add a tiny pinch of salt per drink.
- Top each glass with cold beer and garnish to your liking.
