Hurricane Cocktail
Besides its culture and “joie de vivre, as a foody, I always wanted to visit New Orleans. Make a reservation at Brennan’s and try Eggs Hussarde 🥚 or Bananas Foster 🍌. Arnaud’s is another one on my list so I can compare my Oysters Bienville with theirs. Have some beignets from Café du Monde or take a hands-on Cajun cooking class…
Today is Mardi Gras and to highlight the event, I couldn’t resist showcasing one of many drinks created in New Orleans which is Hurricane Cocktail! With two types of rum along with 3 different types of fruit juices, simple syrup and grenadine, this sweet cocktail 🍹 is perfect to serve at your next party!
Many drinks were created in “NOLA” like Mint Julep, Sazerac, Pimm’s Cup, Gin Fizz, Café Brûlot Diabolique or French 75 both from Arnaud, Brandy Milk Punch, Absinthe Frappé, Voodoo Daiquiri also known as “purple drink”, etc.
Created in the French Quarter at Pat O’Brien’s Bar during the 1940s, the Hurricane Cocktail is a true New Orleans’ classic! It’s a lovely sweet drink but underneath, it can really give you a buzz as it contains 4 ounces of rum!
During post-prohibition, there was an excessive amount of rum and in order to get other liquors, the distributor would sell them to Pat O’Brien’s Bar as long as they agreed to take 50 cases of rum wanted or not. Therefore, that is how the drink was created by using a large amount of rum…
Being one of the most popular drinks in the French Quarter, this Hurricane Cocktail is certainly one to enjoy today on Mardi Gras 📿. Sipping it slowly, this refreshing mix is a great recipe to add to your bar menu.
Cheers!🥂
