Tuna Melt
Pinterest Hidden Image

I like to look back and see how much I’ve improved in the kitchen throughout the years. When I just moved out on my own as a young adult, I cooked very little. My cooking knowledge was frightening! If it would be possible, I would’ve been able to burn water… silly but not too far from the truth, lol! I knew that I had to start somewhere and then eventually with practice (a lot), I would get better… thanks to my positive outlook!

Back then I was “trying” to come up with a lot of canned sardines as well as canned tuna recipes which were not always a success, trust me on that one! Then one day after mixing a few ingredients together that I found in my almost empty pantry, I thought I just created an amazing recipe until I realized later on that it was the bare bones of what is called a “Tuna Melt”. Nonetheless, that recipe gave me enough courage to continue cooking and eventually create my own recipes.

Here are the reasons why I’m sharing this recipe with you today. It has a great combination of ingredients that makes it delicious and it’s a very quick meal to put together.. Also this Tuna Melt can be served as a canapé (it means bite-size hors d’oeuvre in French that is served during an event or a soirée). All you have to do to make it fancier is by spooning the tuna mixture on miniature pieces of bread of your choice and then garnishing it with fresh chives… Voilà!

Also when I have some leftover Hot Dog Buns or Hamburger Buns, I use them instead of the Dinner Rolls or vice versa.

Either as a meal or “amuse-gueule”, this recipe is simple, tasty and quick to make – all great reasons to keep it in your recipe binder!
Bon Appétit!

Ingredients

  • 1 (5 oz.) can tuna, drained and flaked
  • 3 tbsp. Miracle Whip®
  • 1 tsp. Dijon mustard
  • 1 tsp. fresh chopped dill tips & tricks
  • 1 tsp. freshly squeezed lemon juice tips & tricks
  • 1/4 tsp. hot sauce such as Cholula®, or to taste
  • freshly ground black pepper, to taste (I always use mixed peppercorns)
  • Small pinch ground Himalayan sea salt
  • 2 tsp. green onions, finely chopped
  • 1/8 tsp. cayenne pepper (optional)
  • 2 regular dinner rolls (substitute hamburger buns), sliced see Recipe
  • 1/4 cup sharp Cheddar cheese, grated

Directions

  • Turn the oven on broil and arrange a rack about 6-inches from the heating element.
  • In a bowl, add tuna, Miracle Whip®, Dijon mustard, dill, lemon juice, hot sauce, freshly ground black pepper, salt, and green onions; stir until well blended. If you want a little heat, add cayenne pepper.
  • Spoon the tuna mixture evenly on top of 4 bread pieces; top with cheese (*see footnote).
  • Place them on a baking sheet lined with a silicone mat or parchment paper and transfer to the oven. Broil until the cheese is JUST melted, about 5 minutes.
  • Remove from the heat and serve immediately.

Notes

Footnote: If you want to serve it as a canapé, use fancier food vessels such as miniature English muffins or miniature croissants and then garnish with fresh chives.
