Secret to Better Freezer Meat Storage
I detest wasting food! Not only is it costly but it’s also ridiculous to throw food in the garbage while there are so many people around the world starving. In Canada alone, we are averaging over 800 lbs. per person… that’s way too much! A common way food is wasted is from freezer burn where it is stored incorrectly but I do have a great kitchen trick to prevent this…
During the summer months, I find people tend to freeze meats more often. The Secret to Better Freezer Meat Storage is to add this simple little step for great results.
What you need is good, thick re-sealable freezer bags and wax paper.
– You have to cut your wax paper big enough to wrap the piece of meat
– Place each piece on a separate sheet of wax paper and wrap tightly
– Transfer your wrapped meat to a re-sealable freezer bag and depending on the size, you can portion the meats for your family’s needs.
For example, I wrap two large chicken breasts individually and place each in the same medium re-sealable freezer bag and then transfer them to the freezer (don’t forget to label/write the contents and date on your bags). When I need chicken breasts for a recipe, I remove a bag from the freezer and thaw it out in the refrigerator until I need it. This works out great for smaller chicken recipes for the two of us such as Orzo with Chicken & Asiago, Hawaiian Chicken Curry, Chicken Française, and so on.
For pork chops, I usually wrap 4 chops in a large re-sealable freezer bag for recipes like Asian Sesame Pork Chops, Caribbean Jerk BBQ Pork Chops, Pork Schnitzel, etc.
Now with pork tenderloin, I usually wrap individually 4 tenderloins and place them in a large re-sealable freezer bag. When I need some for a recipe such as Pork Tenderloin Vitali, Maple Mustard Pork Tenderloin, Pork Tenderloin with Spicy Pineapple-Mango Sauce, I remove what I need from the bag, place on a plate and thaw out in the refrigerator. This Better Freezer Meat Storage trick also works great for steaks, fish, seafood, etc.
You’ll be pleasantly surprised by how well this Better Freezer Meat Storage method protects your meats from freezer burn as well as keeping it moist. It takes just a little extra time but it worth’s every penny as you’ll see by the results!
