Slow Cooker BBQ Sloppy Joes

I’m sitting here in front of my computer thinking about how long it will take me to write 📝 my blog because I have to be somewhere else soon.

Yes, “time” sure can be an issue in our modern society. Everything well almost everything is on a timetable and has to be planned; we get up at a specific time just so we won’t be late for work. We have to pick up the kids at a certain time so they don’t miss their scheduled lessons/sports. When we get home, there’s little time left to cook, clean 🧼🧺 and do other chores around the house. Later on, when we finally take the time to relax and watch our favorite programs on TV, even that is set on a rigid agenda. I can go on and on about it but I don’t have enough time to do it!

Last month, David and I moved 🚛 into to our new place and we were fortunate enough to have 4 weeks to do it. Although it wasn’t a race to move out and move in, our time was still limited. We did eat out quite a few times but we were missing our home cooked meals. One recipe I haven’t made for a long time was my Slow Cooker BBQ Sloppy Joes and it was the perfect solution for our lack of time…

After finding it buried in one of our boxes and dusting it off – I still don’t understand why I don’t use it more often 🤔 – the slow cooker was ready to go. With very little preparation, everything was in it, the timer was on and we went on with our moving. After a long day of cleaning, fixing, hanging, planning, etc., a nice meal was waiting for us.

When I do have time, I like to serve this lovely Slow Cooker BBQ Sloppy Joes recipe with my homemade Hamburger Buns. They are so fresh, tasty and nicely wrap up any dish that needs these buns as a food vessel. Other times, I spoon the mixture onto English Muffins. Yes, I realize it’s not the traditional way to eat it but you’ll be surprised by how well it pairs with it.

If you don’t have enough time at the end of the day to 👩‍🍳👨‍🍳 cook a nice meal, this Slow Cooker BBQ Sloppy Joes is the perfect recipe for you. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I really have to run…
Bon Appétit!🍽

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 lbs. lean ground beef
  • 1 cup red onions, chopped
  • 1 cup poblano peppers, seeded and chopped
  • 3 large cloves garlic, pressed
  • 1/2 tsp. garlic salt
  • freshly ground black pepper, to taste (I always use mixed peppercorns)
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 3/4 cup your favorite BBQ sauce
  • 1/4 cup low-sodium beef broth
  • 2 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tbsp. chili sauce
  • 2 tbsp. prepared yellow mustard, or more to taste
  • 2 tbsp. brown sugar, such as demerara
  • 1 tbsp. cider vinegar
  • 1 tbsp. chili powder
  • 4 large toasted hamburger buns see Recipe
  • 4 slices cheese *optional

Directions

  • In a large skillet over medium heat, combine ground beef, onions and poblano peppers. Cook until the beef is almost done. Add garlic and sauté for 1 minute. Transfer the meat mixture to a colander to drain; leave it for 5 minutes.
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine ketchup, BBQ sauce, beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, chili sauce, mustard, brown sugar, cider vinegar, and chili powder; whisk until well blended.
  • Transfer the beef mixture to the crock pot and pour over the BBQ sauce mixture. Stir very well, close the lid and set the timer on “Low” for 4 hours.
  • About 5 minutes before the end of cooking time, grill hamburger buns.
  • When the cooking time is up, stir again before spooning over the buns. Add a slice of cheese and enjoy!
