Papaya Smoothie

Back in the early 80s’, a lot of foreign produce arrived in North America 🌎 and were displayed on the shelves at the supermarkets. I’ve always been adventurous with food and each time I saw some produce I never tried before, it was just a matter of time before I grabbed it to give it a try…

As I was in my 20s’ back then, I started travelling a lot 🛫 and eventually ended up in Mexico… Puerto Vallarta to be more precise. Back then, the Marina and Hotel Zona near the Jalisco airport was just a big construction site. I went there with my boyfriend who actually proposed to me – I said “yes” but a year after, I terminated the relationship… he wasn’t the one!

Anyway, Carlo and I tried a lot of different produce while exploring downtown Puerto Vallarta and the Zona Romantica. That is when we discovered this incredible fruit! It was only 15 years later that I finally saw it at my local grocery store, bought it 🛒 and made this recipe… Papaya Smoothie!

I can’t say it’s entirely my creation because this is how we enjoyed it at the resort where Carlos and I stayed but not having the ingredients list, by recollection, I tried to reproduce what we both really liked to have almost every morning during our vacation.

When making the Papaya Smoothie, I use 1% milk but other times, I substitute almond milk… so good! Originally, I was using plain yogurt and some pure vanilla extract. Now, I simply use some of my favorite Vanilla Yogurt by Activia. Agave nectar is my preferred ingredient as it’s not as thick as honey 🍯 but nothing is stopping you from swapping them.

Let’s talk about papaya…
This fruit is very versatile because not only is it amazing in this beverage but also a great ingredient for cakes, muffins, breads 🍞, desserts such as in a fruit salad or turned it into a boat for breakfast with your favorite yogurt, fruits, nuts and oats. It makes a nice jam too!

Although incredible in sweet recipes, it’s great for savory as well. I think of a delicious Thai Salad called “Som Tam”, Crab & Papaya Spring Rolls (coming in 2024), Santula which is a mixed vegetable curry, Papaya Chutney for your Charcuterie Board, Chinese Papaya Soup, and the list goes on…

This fruit is underrated. To me, it’s a superfood 😍! It has high levels of Vitamin A, C and E, antioxidants, anti-inflammatory properties, an energy booster, reduces the risk of heart disease, cancer, diabetes, lower blood pressure and curbs hunger. It has fiber, potassium and is actually low in sugar.

Similar to Batida de Lechosa from the Dominican Republic, this Papaya Smoothie is incredibly refreshing and so healthy! It’s the perfect beverage to enjoy after fasting overnight. It’s quick to make ⏳ and a tasty way to enjoy this amazing fruit. Get your blender ready to make this fresh and delicious smoothie!
To your Health! 💚
