As friends, we should always be supportive and encourage each others dreams 🥰 although we might not always agree about the choices… I call that respect!
 
One of my friends, Joanne from Milton, Ontario, decided years ago to start a tea shop. The concept was amazing! She wasn’t only selling loose tea but also anything related to it; tea pots, tea cups, tea containers 🍶, tea bags, etc. At the cash register, she also had a wide selection of chocolates… yummy!
 
I bought 🛒 whatever I could because I wanted to support and encourage her in her business venture. I bought so many different varieties of loose teas; from oolong to rooibos and everything in between. One day, she had me try a popular tea from India and Pakistan. Oh my! It was incredibly amazing and I loved it! The one I’m talking about here is Indian Masala Chai! This aromatic tea is fabulously flavorful! Brewed with black tea and spices, this is a beverage that is seriously awesome! Just some quick info – masala means “mixture of spices” and chai means “tea”
 
When I moved 🚛 to British Columbia, I went to a couple of tea shops in Vancouver and bought some but unfortunately, they were not as strong and spicy as Joanne’s. One day, I decided to make my own. Just from the taste of it, I kind of knew which spices were in it and since then, I’ve being enjoying my own homemade masala tea whenever I feel like having some!
 
I love to sip ☕ my Indian Masala Chai on a cold afternoon! When it comes to the ingredient amounts, I’ve given you “the smoother” version of it. I personally prefer a much stronger flavor using more peppercorns. Like any recipe you come across, the amounts are just guidelines and you can always adjust them to your liking.
 
I always have my chai mix ready in my spice drawer so I can enjoy this tea. On the other hand, I also like making recipes with the blend like Pumpkin Chai Bread, Chocolate Chai Pie, Chai Cupcakes, Coconut Chai Iced Tea, etc.
 
Depending on how I feel, I either make it with half water and half milk 🥛 or go for a richer flavor using strictly milk. It’s such a tasty Indian Masala Chai to enjoy by the fireplace with a book and your favorite music playing in the background. Take out your spice grinder and try this delicious chai! Another one that should be on your “to do” list is Kashmiri Chai Tea • Pink Tea… it’s incredibly amazing!

This incredible flavorful homemade chai recipe is perfect to enjoy at anytime! You can make it as strong as you want and if you prefer a richer flavor, use more or just milk...

Ingredients
  

MASALA CHAI MIX

  • 2 tsp. green cardamom (substitute 1 tsp. ground)
  • 1 tsp. whole cloves
  • 1 large star anise
  • 1 large cinnamon stick
  • 1/2 tsp. whole mixed peppercorns, or more to taste Footnote #1
  • 1/2 tsp. freshly grated nutmeg

MASALA CHAI LATTE

  • 1 cup water (substitute milk) Footnote #2
  • 1 tsp. loose black tea (substitute tea powder)
  • 1 tsp. fresh chopped ginger, or more to taste
  • 1/2 tsp. masala chai mix
  • 1 cup milk

Directions
 

MASALA CHAI MIX

  • In the jar of a spice grinder, add cardamom, cloves, star anise, cinnamon stick and peppercorns. Process until fine.
  • Transfer to a bowl and add freshly grated nutmeg; stir well.
  • Store in an airtight container.

MASALA CHAI LATTE

  • In a saucepan over medium heat, add water (or milk) and bring to a boil.
  • Add black tea, ginger and chai mix. Stir and boil for 3 minutes.
  • Add milk and if desired, add sweetness to it. Reduce the heat to medium, stir and simmer for 2 minutes.
  • Remove from the heat and steep for 2 minutes.
  • Strain the mixture in a sieve over a cup pressing down with the back of a spoon; discard the solids.

Notes

Footnote #1: I usually add 1 1/4 tsp. of whole mixed peppercorns because I like it stronger so adjust it to your liking.
Footnote #2: If you want a richer latte, just use milk but make sure it doesn't boil and simmer for only 5 minutes.
