- 3 cups red cabbage, thinly sliced & about 2-inches long
- 1 large apple (such as Gala, Spartan or McIntosh), peeled, cored and diced
- 1/4 cup red onions, diced
- 2 tbsp. butter tips & tricks
- 1 1/2 tbsp. brown sugar, such as demerara
- 1 1/2 ounces organic apple cider vinegar
- 1 1/2 ounces water
- 1/2 tsp. freshly ground black pepper, or to taste (I always use mixed peppercorns)
- 1/2 tsp. ground cloves Footnote
In a deep saucepan over medium heat, add butter and when it starts sizzling, add the onions; sauté for about 2 to 3 minutes.
Add apple and sugar; cook for 2 to 3 minutes. Stir in vinegar, water and cabbage; add pepper and cloves.
Bring to a boil then reduce the heat to low, cover and simmer until the cabbage is tender, about 40 minutes, stirring often.
Footnote: If you are using whole cloves, it's about 8 to 10 of them, crushed
