FILLING
- 5 cups apples such as Honey Crisp, Empire or Granny Smith (about 4 large apples), peeled, cored and sliced
- 2 tbsp. freshly squeezed lemon juice tips & tricks
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 3/4 cup brown sugar, such as demerara
- 1 tbsp. unbleached all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp. ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp. ground ginger
- 1/8 tsp. freshly grated nutmeg
- 1 tsp. pure vanilla extract
TOPPING
- 1 cup rolled oats
- 3/4 cup unbleached all-purpose flour
- 1 cup brown sugar, such as demerara
- 1/4 tsp. baking powder
- 1/4 tsp. baking soda
- 1/8 tsp. ground Himalayan pink salt
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
FILLING
Preheat oven to 350ºF.
In a large mixing bowl, add sliced apples and pour over lemon juice. Stir to coat to prevent from browning.
Add sugars, flour, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and vanilla extract; stir well to coat the apples. Transfer to a pie plate along with any accumulated juices and set aside.
In a another bowl, combine oats, flour, brown sugar, baking powder, baking soda and sea salt; stir. Add the melted butter and mix until the mixture is crumbly.
Evenly spoon the crumble mixture over the filling and transfer to the preheated oven. Bake for 50 to 55 minutes or until the top is nice and brown, crispy and golden.
Cool off for 15 minutes before serving with vanilla ice cream.
