Ingredients

  • 1 lb. (500g) lean ground beef
  • 1/2 cup white onions, finely chopped
  • 3 large cloves garlic, pressed
  • 1 can (6 oz.) tomato paste tips & tricks
  • 1/2 cup low-sodium beef broth
  • 2 tsp. brown sugar, such as demerara
  • 4-5 tbsp. prepared yellow mustard
  • 1 tbsp. dried onion flakes
  • 2 tsp. chili powder
  • 1 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp. celery seed
  • 1/2 tsp. ground cumin
  • 1/4 tsp. freshly ground black pepper (I always use mixed peppercorns), or to taste
  • 1/4 tsp. garlic salt, or to taste

Directions

  • In a large skillet over medium heat, brown ground beef, breaking it down into small pieces. Halfway thru cooking, add onions and cook until they begin to turn translucent. Stir garlic in and cook for an additional minute.
  • Add remaining ingredients and stir well. Simmer uncovered for 15 minutes or until sauce thickens. Meanwhile, cook the hot dogs.
  • To serve, place a cooked hot dog (either grilled or boiled) on top of a steamed or heated bun. Ladle on a big scoop of Coney Island meat sauce, and finish with yellow mustard and chopped white onions.
